We are a small, friendly team providing comprehensive kidney care across Dumfries and Galloway, delivering a service that our patients & staff can be proud of.

Services

We provide a full range of kidney medical services including virtual and on-site outpatient clinics across the region, extensive diagnostic services including native kidney biopsy, treatments including in-centre and home haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, plasma exchange, immunosuppression for immunological renal disease, and long-term care of kidney and kidney-pancreas transplant recipients.

Outpatient haemodialysis is provided at 3 satellite units: 18-station dialysis unit at Mountainhall Treatment Centre, a 4-station dialysis unit in the Galloway Community Hospital, and a 3-station dialysis unit in Kirkcudbright Cottage Hospital.  Patients admitted to Dumfries and Galloway Royal infirmary with or developing kidney disease have the benefit of consultant delivered care, inpatient dialysis on the critical care unit or Ward D8 and a senior doctor delivered outreach service for patients with kidney disease under the care of other specialities.

Communication

We have committed to the ‘please write to me’ JRC recommendations in all out-patient communication.  We work very closely both with primary and secondary care colleagues.

Transplant

We have an excellent working relationship with tertiary centres including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Most of the recipient and donor kidney transplantation work up is done locally with a Transplant Surgeon visiting Dumfries from Glasgow to minimise the patient travel burden. We consistently perform above average with the number of transplants performed annually. Kidney transplants are undertaken at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and kidney-pancreas transplants at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.   Once discharged from hospital, follow up care is shared between our unit and the transplant centre initially, then as things stabilise most patients do not need to travel to Glasgow / Edinburgh on a regular basis.

Feedback

We scored an overall 6.6 in the Kidney Patient Reported Experience Measure 2020 versus a UK national average of 6.2, outperforming the national average across all themes assessed.
